Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is expected of me in doing an FYP?
A. The general expectations of FYP can be found under Guideline for FYP in the information section on final year projects.

Q. What happens if I am unable to finish my FYP work within the given timeframe?
A. Student will be given an ‘F’ grade unless extension of FYP project is granted with approval from supervisors and Director of BTech.

Q. How do I indicate that I wish to start my FYP?
A. Student is required to submit an online declaration form and they are also required to register for the FYP module. Submission of the declaration form without registering for the module does NOT mean the project has officially started. For students doing self-proposed projects, the project must be approved by the FYP coordinator before the declaration form and FYP module registration is done.

Q. Once I have started on the FYP, is it possible to defer it halfway?
A. When a student has committed to start a FYP, he is obligated to finish it within the prescribed time frame unless a leave of absence is granted. Leave of absence is only granted when a student is able to provide strong reasons for it.

Q. Is in-camp training a reason for deferment?
No.

Q. Is it possible to do a FYP project related to my work?
A. Students are strongly encouraged to do work related projects. To do so the student has to propose a project on-line and email the FYP coordinator. For work related projects, a supervisor from your workplace is required. This is to prevent problems of accidental exposure of proprietary company information. The student is also encouraged to find an academic supervisor on his own. If the student is unable to do so, the FYP coordinator will do so on his behalf.

Q. What is the role of the workplace supervisor?
A. The workplace supervisor does not have to be actively involved in the project. The student is primarily answerable to his academic supervisor. The workplace supervisor also will NOT be involved in determining the student's grades.

Q. Can I still do a work-related FYP if it involves information that is protected by my company?
A. Students are encouraged to discuss with their workplace supervisors to ensure that no protected information is revealed in the thesis. The University is not liable for any damages in the event of protected information being revealed in the thesis. It may be possible to write the thesis in a more generic rather than specific way in order to prevent protected information from being revealed.

Q. What happens if I leave my company before my work-related FYP is completed?
A. It is the student's sole responsibility to deal with such a situation. The BTech Office will, however, assist in whatever way possible that it can to resolve this problem.

Q. When can I begin my FYP?
A. Please refer to the recommended schedule for your own course on BTech website.

Q. If I wish to start the FYP at the second semester of my third year, will there be a list of projects that I can select from?
A. Yes but approval is required from course coordinator. However, project selection is only available for those starting their FYPs at the first semester of the fourth year. Students wishing to start their FYPs earlier than this must propose their own projects.

Q. If I wish to propose my own project, can I choose an academic supervisor to guide me?
A. Yes. In fact, you are strongly encouraged to do so. However, you will still need to submit the on-line form with your project proposal.

Q. If I know an academic supervisor has a project that interests me, can I use his project as my proposal?
A. If you approach the academic supervisor and he agrees to allow you to work on it then you can submit the online form with the details of that project in your project. However, the FYP coordinator still reserves the right to approve or reject the proposal.

Q. When will I know when my FYP proposal has been approved?
A. FYP proposals will be processed as soon as they are received. However, a student is only expected to work on his project officially by completing the online declaration form to start the project and registering for the FYP module.

Q. If my project proposal is rejected; can I re-propose another project again?
A. The reason for rejection is normally on the grounds of insufficient scope for applying scientific problem-solving approaches in the proposal. The FYP coordinator will work with the student to see how the scope of his original proposal can be reworked so that the objectives of the FYP are met. A student may be asked to re-submit another proposal based on the recommendations given.

Q. If I do not wish to propose any project, will there be projects assigned to me?
A. At the end of the second semester of the third year, a list of projects by academic supervisors will be compiled for student project selection. Projects will then be assigned according to the selection made. These projects will commence in the first semester of the fourth year.

Q. Can I specify a particular project that I would like to do from the list proposed by the academic supervisors?
A. If the student speaks to the academic supervisor and the academic supervisor agrees to assign the project to him, then this is possible. The student must then send an email message to the FYP coordinator to inform him of this assignment. However, this must be done before the project selection begins. After project selection begins, the allocation of FYP from the list provided by academic supervisors is handled strictly by selection and no arrangements will be allowed. Once a project is assigned, no request for change will be entertained.

Q. Am I able to change my project halfway if I am dissatisfied with it?
A. Once a student has registered to start a FYP on a title, he is discouraged from changing it midway. If the student is adamant about changing the project, he must consult the supervisor and get supervisor’s approval with final approval from the BTech Director.

Q. Am I able to purchase equipment for the project?
Student will need to fill up a purchase request form and obtain approval from supervisor. Once approval is given, submit the purchase request form to BTech Office and it will be processed and deducted from the available FYP fund.

Q. Are there any guidelines to writing the FYP thesis?
A. Students are encouraged to consult their supervisors before writing the thesis.
